Friday night was Subway Night at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre and the UNB Varsity Reds slipped past the UPEI Panthers 80-69. With only three minutes the Panthers trailed by only three but were unable to hold the Reds. The Panthers battle got tougher after Nakita Newman suffered a nose bleed and was unable to return to the game.
The first and second quarters were total opposite as both teams came out firing and running a fast pace game scoring 59 points total, UNB 33 – UPEI 26. The second quarter was all defense seeing only 25 points total for the two teams, 7 for UNB and 18 for UPEI. The teams headed to the locker room with a score of UPEI 44 – UNB 40.
UNB took a two point lead at the end of the third and finished with a strong last three minutes to win 80-69. Claire Colborne led the Reds with 22 points followed by Megan Corby with 11. For the Panthers Jenna Jones chipped in 11 points and Katelynn Donahoe, Emily MacEachern and Nakita Newman each added 10. The Panthers hit the road tomorrow morning to face Dalhousie tomorrow night at 7 pm.
