This weekend was a huge one for the women's basketball Panthers. The team traveled to Memorial in Newfoundland, one of the hardest places to play in the conference and came away with a weekend split - earning a 77-73 victory on Saturday and a 95-71 loss on Sunday. Video highlights from MUN weekend.
On Saturday, the Panthers struggled to make open shots in the first half but their defense kept them in the game trailing 36-31 at half. The team's shooting started to heat up in the third quarter. Led by second year guard Jenna Jones, the Panthers took the lead and never looked back, even with a late push by the Memorial Seahawks. Jenna Jones finished the game with a team high 23 points, Emily MacEachern had 12, Nakita Newman had 10, and Danielle MacDonald added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
On Sunday, the Seahawks came out roaring and ready. Despite a decent start, it was clear the Panthers did not have the energy and intensity to match the Seahawks after their loss the previous night. The Seahawks consistently found open shots and knocked them down. They took a 20 point lead into half time and never looked back. Although the Panthers were outplayed on the day, they never quit and played until the final buzzer. A good lesson learned about the workings of the AUS on this day - "After you beat a team you need to be ready to face their best effort when they get a chance to get even the next day. We haven't been in this situation yet, so we will learn from this game for sure." Stated Coach Clarke. Jones, Newman, and McKenna all contributed 11 points, while Gough added 10.
