Women's Basketball

OTTAWA (CIS) – The CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) proudly announced Friday that for the first time since the launch of the Shoot for the Cure campaign five years ago, all 43 CIS women’s basketball schools would take part in the initiative that raises money for the fight against breast cancer.

Women's Basketball

Sunday afternoon at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre the UPEI women’s basketball did not pick up a win on paper, but they did gain a ton of respect from the fans that were on hand to watch them battle it out with the Memorial Seahawks in triple overtime, losing 107-96.

The UPEI Panthers lost a heartbreaker Saturday night at the Chi-Wan Young Sport Centre 61-58 versus the Memorial Seahawks.

The Panthers came out firing in the first half leading 40-26 after twenty minutes before things would change. Start of the third quarter Memorial stepped it up and outscored the Panthers 19-10.

For Newfoundland-natives Laura Power and Amy Gough, this weekend’s Atlantic University Sport basketball matchup versus the Memorial University Sea-Hawks should be a special one.

For the UPEI Panthers duo, it’s a chance to square off against the team they grew up watching.

The UPEI Panthers needed a win today over the Tigers to move up in the standing. UPEI was unable to jump ahead and lost the battle  73-58.

Friday night was Subway Night  at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre and the UNB Varsity Reds slipped past the UPEI Panthers 80-69. With only three minutes the Panthers trailed by only three but were unable to hold the Reds.  The Panthers battle got tougher after Nakita Newman suffered a nose bleed and was unable to return to the game.

Nakita Newman is a second- year post with the UPEI women’s basketball team and she sat with us for some court side questioning.

1.        What brought you to UPEI?

“During my basketball career with Team Alberta, my team participated in the Canada Games here on the Island. The experience of winning the national championship, as well as the kind hearted people that I was able to interact with while here, all helped to influence me into considering UPEI very seriously.

Friday night is Subway Night at the UPEI Panthers basketball games. Come out and watch the Panthers take on the UNB Varsity Reds at 6 pm and 8 pm.   SUBWAY is an official sponsor of the AUS and to celebrate there will be contests and prizes though out the evening.

Coach Carly Clarke and the UPEI women`s basketball, picked up their second win of the season 90-83 vs. St.FX Sunday afternoon in Charlottetown.

UPEI lead after the first 10 minutes 20-17 and increased the lead to 42-36 at half.  St. FX would not go down easy and after 30 minutes cut the Panthers lead to one point, 57-56.
