A goal by Kieshian Bean in the first minute of overtime was the deciding factor in a 2-1 win for the Cape Breton Capers over the UPEI Panthers in the championship game for the 2009 Subway AUS title played Monday morning at Wickwire field in Halifax.
Both sides played defensive soccer in the first half and into the second with neither team wanting to make a mistake that could result in that important first goal. Then in the 56th minute, Cape Breton striker Shane Hollis hooked up with a long ball out of his backfield and managed to get in behind the Panther back line. A finish low to UPEI’s keeper Timma Kalinowski’s left gave the Capers the lead they were looking for. But the Panthers were not prepared to go down without a fight. It took until the 86th minute before UPEI got their goal, when striker, Jimmie Mayaleh gathered up a Danny McAleer pass, cut the ball back across his front and finished with a technical shot to the far post.
Just seconds after, Mayaleh was sent off for his second caution leaving the Panthers down a man going into overtime.
Just 30 seconds into the first overtime Bean split the centre backs and redirected a pass past a helpless Kalinowski. Playing down a man, the Panthers still pressed with Jared Murphy ringing the cross bar on a free kick and Logan Dawson missing on a final seconds corner kick attempt before time finally ran out on the Panthers.
“In terms of character and commitment, the boys were great today,” said coach Lewis Page. “I can’t say enough about the courage they showed in trying to win that game.”
Playing five and a half hours of soccer within a time span of 44 hours, isn’t exactly what most teams would aspire to but that’s what playoff soccer in the AUS is all about.
Both teams will now hop a plane today and fly to BC to represent the Atlantic Provinces in the CIS Nationals, November 12-15.
