A three goal night by CBU striker Keishen Bean was the difference as the Cape Breton Capers rolled past the UPEI Panthers Saturday evening at the UPEI turf by a score of 3-1. It was all Capers in the first half as Bean finished on two of his goals in the 23rd and 28th minutes from hard low crosses in from the right flank. The crisp ball movement and quickness of the Capers gave the Panthers fits and prevented them from mounting any serious attacks. The half finished 2-0.
Realizing that a change in tactics was desperately needed if any result was to be obtained, the Panthers came out of the dressing room with a high pressure attack system that appeared to be doing the job. The Capers didn’t react well to being pressured all over the field and it looked like the Panthers had a chance of getting back into the game until the 64th minute when Bean struck for his 3rd off a free kick. UPEI brought it close again in the 75th minute when Jimmy Mayaleh redirected a Dan McAleer corner kick to cut the lead to two but time and Panther energy had run out.
“Cape Breton are a good side and came here ready to play,” said coach Lewis Page. “They got a good jump on us in the first half. I think if we had played with the intensity in the first half that we did in the second half then it would have been a better game.” On the game UPEI outshot the Capers 13-10 while CBU outchanced the Panthers 6-4, with UPEI having the edge in corner kicks 7-5.
Cape Breton keeper Chris Tournidis was the winning goal tender while Timma Kalinowski suffered the loss for the Panthers in goal.
