It was a tough weekend for the UPEI men’s soccer Panthers, who lost their second 1-0 game in as many days against the St. Mary’s Huskies at Huskies Staidum Sunday afternoon.
Under excellent playing conditions, both teams had their chances but goals were hard to come by. The Huskies did their damage in the 41st minute when strike Mohammed Shamout scored on a well-placed 30-yard shot just inside Panthers’ keeper Andrew MacSwain’s far post.
“St. Mary’s scored a great goal to win the game,’’ a 30-yard screamer,” said UPEI coach Lewis Page. “Again, we had a lot of our own problems all weekend so at least those are things we can correct ourselves this week in training.”
UPEI?marginally outchanced St. Mary’s 4-3 in the game. Sean Harvey, in goal for the Huskies, picked up the clean sheet.
All weekend, the Panthers lacked that drive that carried the club to eight wins during the season. Maybe it was partially because they had clinched a playoff spot two weeks prior.
UPEI?is now faced with playing the extra game this coming Friday against the St. F.X. X-Men in AUS playoff quarterfinal action at Dalhousie.
It will make the road to the CIS just a little bit tougher.
