Recognition and Preservation
The University Sports Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the athletic programs at the University of Prince Edward Island, St. Dunstan's University, or Prince of Wales College. Each year, individual athletes, teams, and builders will be inducted to honour their contributions to the University's athletic success or community leadership. Anyone with an interest in UPEI, SDU, or PWC athletics is invited to submit nominations.
Administered by a steering committee and chaired by the director of alumni affairs (or designate), we also:
● procure memorabilia
● ensure memorabilia are properly registered, catalogued, conserved, stored, and displayed
● oversee the continual growth and enhancement of Hall of Fame material
● organize the induction ceremony
● maintain memberships in sport history and heritage organizations
Award Categories
Athlete/Team
Nominee(s) must have represented UPEI, SDU, or PWC as a student-athlete(s) and/or competed with distinction at the highest level of athletic competition available at the time. Normally, consideration for selection will be given to an athlete/team following a minimum five-year absence from the varsity program. The primary selection criteria for this category is the athlete's or team’s contribution to UPEI, SDU or PWC.
Factors for consideration:
● achievements in provincial, national, and international athletic competitions
● character and leadership
● non-athletic service to the University community
● achievement in later life
Builder
Nominee must be a member of the University community who has made a significant contribution to UPEI, SDU, PWC athletics for a minimum of five years other than as a student-athlete.
Consideration will not be given until a minimum of 10 years after a nominee’s initial involvement or appointment.
Selection Committee
The selection committee is composed of seven members (a maximum of four representatives from alumni and media; at least two members must be women). The committee may make recommendations regarding amendments to the selection procedures to the Sports Hall of Fame steering committee.
Nomination Procedure
Any individual with an interest in UPEI, SDU, or PWC athletics may submit nominations for the Sports Hall of Fame. Each nomination must be accompanied by a 500-word description of the nominee’s career. People may not nominate themselves and coaches may not nominate their team(s).
The committee will issue calls for nominations through such outlets as the UPEI website, the student newspaper, local media, varsity programs and schedules, etc.
Award Recognition
Inductees and guests are honoured at the UPEI Sports Hall of Fame reception and dinner held each year.
