The Saint Mary’s Huskies defeated the UPEI Panthers 1-0 to win the Maritime university field hockey championship Sunday in Charlottetown.
Rebecca Pointon scored for SMU on a deflection off a penalty corner with just over five minutes remaining. The Panthers appeared to tie the game two minutes later off a scramble in front of the Saint Mary’s keeper. However, even though a goal was initially signaled, the call was reversed because one of the officials ruled the ball had hit a UPEI player’s foot.
UPEI finished the tournament with a 3-2 record while scoring 13 goals over the five games. Although UPEI lost 2-0 to SMU and 3-2 to first place Dalhousie Tigers the Panthers played extremely well.
After a heartbreaking loss in the championship game last season, the UPEI women’s field hockey team begins their season in Halifax this weekend with unfinished business.
The UPEI women’s Field Hockey Team were in Montreal for the weekend for a tournament at McGill but the weather allowed play on Saturday only. The Panthers played two excellent games on Saturday, losing both to Western 1-0 and to McGill 1-0. The UPEI team had a number of scoring changes in each game. The young UPEI team impressed both Western and McGill coaching staff.
