Wave Athletes of the week ending January 8 - MacKenzie & Boyle

The Wave UPEI Athletes of the week ending January 8, 2012 are hockey players Jenelle MacKenzie and Matt Boyle.

Women's Athlete
The Wave Female Athlete of the week is women’s hockey Jenelle MacKenzie.  Sunday MacKenzie recorded a hat trick and added one assist in the Panthers 7-1 win over the Saint Mary Huskies.  In the Panthers 2-1 lose Saturday vs. St. FX she played with high intensity and was a leader on the ice.  MacKenzie is a fifth year science student from Hartsville, Prince Edward Island who also played rugby this past fall.  The Panthers head to Mount Allison on Saturday and Saint Thomas on Sunday.
Men's Athlete
Matt Boyle of the men’s hockey team is this week’s male athlete of the week. The Panthers won both games this weekend over St. Mary’s (5-3) and St. FX (2-1) but the true story comes from Boyle’s commitment to UPEI, and the men's hockey program. Friday night Boyle suffered a severe facial injury when he was hit in the mouth with an errant shot. He lost seven teeth, fractured five, and had severe bone tissue damage. He had two root canals and an oral cast placed in his mouth Saturday morning, all with only local anesthesia so he would not be affected by medications and still able to compete Saturday night.  Matt is a true warrior and an inspiration to his team, and all athletes at UPEI.  Boyle is a 2nd year business student from Charlottetown, PE.
