UPEI hosted the last AUS Swim meet of the year at CARI this weekend before the Subway AUS Championship being held at DAL February 10-12, 2012. The results had two UPEI swimmers Janet Gamble and Eric Beaton breaking records and for their efforts are name this week’s Wave Athletes of the Week ending January 22, 2012.
Women's Athlete
For the third time this season 5th year swimmer Janet Gamble is the Wave Female Athlete of the week for the week ending January 22, 2012. Over the three sessions held at CARI Gamble broke three UPEI Varsity records in the 50 m back, 100 m back and 200 m back. On Saturday night the 4X100 relay team lead by Gamble came second for the first time in school history. Gamble now holds 8 individual UPEI swim records. A native of Saskatoon now living in PEI she is taking foods and nutrient at UPEI.
Men's Athlete
Eric Beaton, a fourth year business student is the Wave Male Athlete of the week for the second time this season for his record breaking swim on Sunday at the AUS swim meet held at the CARI pool. Beaton won the 50 m free event with his best time of 23:43 which also is a provincial record and has not lost in the 50m free at CARI in three years. On Saturday he took third in the 50 m back, just shy of his personal best. Beaton now holds 5 individual UPEI swim records and 2 provincial records. Eric is originally from Charlottetown, moved to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and now back as a Panther.
