Livable Islands: Culture, Politics, Economy and Environment
July 4-9, 2014

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

The Master of Arts – Island Studies program at the University of Prince Edward Island is pleased to host the upcoming Reseau d’Excellence des Territoires Insulaires (RETI) meetings in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, July 4-9, 2014.  Join faculty and students interested in island studies scholarship from 26 island-based universities throughout the world in a symposium, field trip and summer school. The program is now available.

July 4-5: Symposium/Conference

Learn about the most recent island-based scholarship from local and international experts in island studies. Twenty presentations will be given on subjects as diverse as renewable energy, islands and their languages, and obesity and health challenges. July 6: Discover Prince Edward Island – A Guided Tour of the Island

For those registered for the entire conference, you will have the opportunity to learn more about this Island. Explore the physical and cultural geography of this beautiful island. The day includes a motor coach tour of Victoria-by-the-sea, the Confederation Bridge and the north shore of PEI, a guided tour of the Lieutenant Governor’s residence of Fanningbank as well as a guided tour of downtown Charlottetown with noted historian Dr. Ed MacDonald.

July 7-9: Graduate/Post-Graduate Student Summer School

Five island studies scholars will each provide three-hour instructional modules on some of the most significant island-based issues. These modules include Small Island Economies: Constraints and Strategies by Dr. Bernard Poirine (Université de la Polynésie Française);  Coastal Communities and Climate Change – Developing Participatory Scenarios by Dr. Tanya Chung Tiam Fook (Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Prince Edward Island);  Practising Island Studies in a Small Island University: Reflections for Students, Scholars and Others by Dr. Godfrey Baldacchino (University of Malta and UPEI);  The Military Functions and Geostrategic Significance of Islands by Dr. Christian Bouchard (Laurentian University) and Defining Islandness by Ms. Laurie Brinklow (PhD Candidate at the University of Tasmania).
