Deirdre Kelly is an interpreter on Parliament Hill, where she provides simultaneous translation between French and English. She got her start in the Faculty of Arts at UPEI.
Deirdre graduated from UPEI’s Faculty of Arts with a Major in French and Minor in Spanish. She earned her Honours BA in 2008 from the University of Ottawa with a specialization in English-French-Spanish translation and began work in translation and editing for the federal government. She completed her Master of Conference Interpreting in 2014, which led to her current position on Parliament Hill.
“My professors at UPEI encouraged me to be bold and move outside my comfort zone by participating in language exchanges and an overseas work term,” says Deirdre. “Without these immersion experiences and the core language skills that I gained in Modern Languages classes at UPEI, I would never have been able to attain the language levels required of a simultaneous interpreter. The professors in the Department of Modern Languages continue to offer support for and a keen interest in my career to this day, more than ten years after my graduation.”
