Health and Fitness Week

Welcome to UPEI Health and Fitness Week 2018! We have many events and activities planned for this week to involve students, staff, and faculty. A committee representing each of these groups came together to plan the best Health and Fitness Week possible. We are excited to present to you a schedule jam-packed with activities you can attend, with focuses varying from mental health, nutrition, physical activity, and general health and wellness! All events are free to attend unless otherwise indicated. We hope that you participate in as many of these activities as you can! Activities brought to you by the UPEI Healthy Campus Committee.

Create your own Zen Zone: We're asking you to get creative this week! Create your own personal zen zone in your office, dorm, or at home. There will be two winners picked at the end of the week. All you have to do is post a picture of your zen zone on social media using the hashtag #upeizenzone or e-mail elbrown@upei.ca. Find your zen and get creating! 

MEMBERSHIP Fitness Classes FREE for UPEI students, staff, and faculty members during the week, October 22–27. On Monday PIYO at 12:10 pm and Core Strong at 5:30 pm. Tuesday evening HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) at 5:30 pm. Wednesday Sculpt n' Tone at 12:10 pm. Thursday evening HIIT at 5:30 pm. Friday is PIYO at 12:10 pm and Zumba at 4:30 pm. Get a head start on your Saturday with HIIT at 10:00 am. Hope to see you there! Classes held in Fitness Studio #1, Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. Please check in at Panther Central desk before going to class.

Monday, October 22

Activity: Zen Zone 
Description: Come join us in the Day Lounge to relax and unwind. We will be providing relaxing activities such as coloring, knitting, and listening to music.

Activity: Flu Vaccine Clinic
Description: The UPEI Health & Wellness Centre is offering two Flu Vaccine Clinics in partnership with Public Health Nursing. No need for an appointment - just drop in. The flu vaccine is free and available to all faculty, staff and students. 
Location: Health Clinic, second floor, W.A. Murphy Student Centre
Time: 11:00 am–6:00 pm (next clinic on November 1, 12:00–5:00 pm)

Activity: Kick-off Guest Speaker 
Description: Join us at McMillan Hall for our official Kick-off for Health & Fitness Week with two time Olympic gold medalist Heather Moyse! Light refreshments will be served while you listen to Heather talk about her accomplishments and what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Tuesday, October 23

Activity: Health Fair 
Description: Exhibitors presenting different health related and promotional material in the form of an informational booth. Over 20 different exhibitors are registered. Food and door prizes!

Activity: Yoga at Chaplaincy Centre 
Description: You will learn how to pair your breath with movement in ways to release stress and decompress tension. Please take your own yoga mat and water.

Activity: East Coast Art Party  
Description: Pre-registration $20 per person, includes all art supplies and you get to keep the selected painting you create. Pre-registration with payment at Panther Central desk, Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. Activity: Soup for the Soul
Description: Come and enjoy some hearty, warm soup to warm your soul.

Activity: Noontime Dodgeball 
Description: Get your throwing arm ready! Join us for an hour in Gym 3 for a good ol' fashioned game of Dodgeball. Open to all UPEI students, staff, and faculty members.

Activity: Plant Party 
Description: No green thumb needed! At our plant party we will be providing you with all supplies needed to create your own quirky terrarium and exploring the benefits of helping your plants help you! Pre registration with $10 per person, payment at Panther Central desk, Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. For UPEI students, staff, and faculty members only. Pre-Registration Deadline: Thursday, October 18

Activity: Healthy Trivia 
Description: Come out to the Fox and Crow, your UPEI campus pub, and join us for an evening of healthy trivia! There will be healthy prizes to be won. Brought to you by the UPEI Student Union.

Activity: Orientation to Equipment in Fitness Centre 
Description: Learn the basic how-to's with Kevin Douillette, a 4th-year kinesiology student and a Level 2 CrossFit coach. He will be taking you through a 30-minute orientation of the gym equipment located in the Fitness Centre. This is a free demonstration but space is limited. Pre-register by October 19. Email elbrown@upei.ca to secure your spot.

Thursday, October 25

Activity: "Creating Balance in Your Life" session
Description: In today's environment of competing demands, relentless commitments, and a consistent feeling of shortage of time, balance often does not come easily or naturally. A conscious effort, deep commitment, and clear priorities are required to create and protect one's sense of balance. This session will help participants explore how their current choices impact their work-life satisfaction and help them to develop strategies to achieve a greater balance in life. Activity: Walking meditation - Pressing the 'PAUSE' button 
Description: Join our Meditation Walk on Wednesday, October 24 to learn how to slow down and recharge your batteries in a world filled with meetings, classes, schedules, exams and deadlines.  Walking Meditation is a very simple way of walking which allows us to relax, develop awareness of what's going on around us and within ourselves and gives us the chance to just rest in silence.

Activity: Glucose/Cholesterol/Blood Pressure Clinic 
Description: Pre-registration required. Call 902-566-0616 to book your 10-minute individual appointments allotted with the campus nurse regarding the above issues.

Activity: Wanda Wyatt Special Lunch 
Description: Contest time! Come up with your healthiest recipe and send it to Angela MacKenzie at angela.mackenzie@compass-canada.com for your chance to win free tickets for you and three friends PLUS your healthy recipe will be a menu item for the luncheon. There will be nutritional booths for you to enhance your learning on healthy eating options. Tickets are $6/person and you can purchase them at the Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall.

Activity: Family Swim
Description: Come join us for a FREE swim at the Bell Aliant Centre. Bring your family and come join us for some fun. Just make sure you bring your student or employee campus ID card. There will be a sign in sheet at the front desk of the Bell Aliant that you can sign and you're good to go! For UPEI students, staff and faculty members and their family.
