Health and Fitness Week

Welcome to UPEI Health and Fitness Week 2017! We have many events and activities planned for this week to involve students, staff and faculty. A committee representing each of these groups came together to plan the best Health and Fitness Week possible. We are excited to present to you a schedule jam-packed with activities you can attend, with focuses varying from mental health, nutrition, physical activity and general health and wellness! All events are free to attend unless otherwise indicated. We hope that you participate in as many of these activities as you can, and stay tuned for new events to be added in the future!

Monday, November 20

Kick-Off Coffee House & Keynote
10:00—11:00 am
The Pit, Robertson Library

Come and help us kick-off Health and Fitness Week 2017! Warm up your body with a nice coffee, tea or hot chocolate, and warm up your heart with Sister Sue Kidd's keynote address about kindness. Energy bars will also be available. 

Zen Zone

W.A. Murphy Student Centre - Day Lounge

There is no health without mental health! The Day Lounge has been designated as the Zen Zone for Monday. Pop in throughout the day and use this space to relax, reflect, and enjoy some provided quiet activities.

Intro to Cooking Healthy Session

Join us and Executive Chef Alan Paul of Chartwells for a cooking session! Learn how to cook simple, healthy meals and have fun while doing it! Samples and recipe cards provided. Meals TBA. Aroma Flow - Yoga and Essential Oils with Genevieve Loughlin
7:00—9:00 pm
Location: Fitness Studio #1, Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre

Enjoy a gentle flow yoga class integrating essential oils. 90 minutes will be dedicated to relaxing yoga, where you will learn to pair your breath with movement. 30 minutes will focus on "Essential Oils 101" and how to incorporate essential oils into your yoga practice and general wellness. As part of Health and Fitness week, the UPEI Department of Athletics & Recreation is hosting Soup for the Soul, using fresh vegetables to make a healthy soup to warm your soul.

Tobacco Cessation Session

Many people have either tried to quit smoking or know of someone who has. Individuals trying to break this harmful habit are often plagued by doubts and thoughts such as "I've smoked for such a long time that it won't do me any good to stop now anyway," or "It's something that I do for me…it's my choice, and besides it doesn't hurt anyone else." This seminar will help participants look at themselves and their reasons for smoking while also exploring some of the myths and realities surrounding this harmful habit. It will also provide guidelines, options, and most importantly, hope to those who would like to quit but have not yet been successful.  At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Recognize common myths about smoking cessation.
  • Understand the five stages of quitting smoking.
  • Develop a multifaceted approach to quitting for good.

Mindfulness Session with Dianne Birt

Join us with mental health counsellor Dianne Birt for a one-hour workshop on practicing mindfulness. This exercise emphasizes self-care and promotes mental wellness, decreasing stress, and meaningful living. FREE to attend. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED. GLOWGA: Glow-In-The-Dark Yoga

Laughter Yoga

Did you know that your body can't tell the difference between fake and real laughter? Led by certified instructor Anne-Marie Rolfe, laughter yoga is a unique activity where anyone can laugh for no reason. It combines laughter exercises with yoga breathing, energizing our body and brain.

Cycle Fit

This indoor cycling class is a cardio challenge using various speeds and resistance levels, sprint drills and more! This class is great for beginners to advanced participants because participants set their own resistance levels. Bernadette Currie will lead the class.  FREE to attend. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED. MIDNIGHT MADNESS!

A Health and Fitness Week first! Are you a night owl or just looking to have fun? Join us for MIDNIGHT MADNESS! We will have activities to suit everyone, including dodgeball, board games, movie, jam session, and more! Bring your friends, stay up past your bedtime, and have some fun!

Yoga and Sound: Elements

Taking place during Midnight Madness - A unique experience with yoga, music, and storytelling. Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether are elements symbolic in many ancient philosophies and healing modalities. These energetic forces are not only outside of our bodies, but inside them as well. Samantha Sambrooke will lead you on a yoga journey through each element to the sounds of crystal singing bowls, drums and flutes played by Trevor Grant of Soundescapes.
