UPEI Strategic Plan Pillar: Exploration and Discovery

Priority: Develop an increasingly integrated research culture that reaches further into our classrooms and communities.

To achieve this by 2018 we will:

  • Increased sponsored research
  • Grow the number of overall research chairs at UPEI
  • Work to grow our already strong performance in research intensity
  • Enhance research pursuits that have both near-term applications and long-range benefits that contribute to the environmental, economic, social, and culture landscape of PEI and our region
  • Leverage existing research expertise while building support for emerging areas of focus
  • Show strong support for interdisciplinary research that furthers scholarship and the development of innovative and relevant programs
  • Enhance graduate student supports
  • Be innovative in introducing research to undergraduate students to foster their curiosity

Some examples of initiatives that are now underway to support our Exploration and Discovery goals include:

  • renewing two of UPEI’s Canada Research Chairs
  • establishing a new leadership structure for Three Oaks Innovations, Inc.
  • launching the interactive climate change program CLIVE, a geovisualization tool  to track and predict the impact of climate-induced coastal erosion on PEI
  • hosting a Time to Write four-day faculty writing retreat to provide uninterrupted time for faculty to pursue scholarly work
  • introducing the fun and high energy Three Minute Thesis competition for graduate students
  • launching the new Summer Program for Undergraduate Research to create a community of undergraduate researchers who can interact and learn from each other, as well as from faculty and support staff
  • hosting four Ethics Workshops with more than 40 registrants from UPEI faculty, staff and students, the PEI Research Ethics Board, the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI, the Native Council of PEI, and Holland College
